Former Indian cricketer Virender Sehwag has shared his thoughts on the crucial topic of workload management in cricket, emphasizing its significance for fast bowlers.
The discussion around workload management gained traction following the Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy, where fans and analysts questioned the limited appearances of Jasprit Bumrah compared to Mohammed Siraj, who played all five Tests consecutively.
Importance of Workload Management for Bowlers
Sehwag expressed that while workload management may not be as critical for batsmen, it is vital for bowlers, particularly fast bowlers.
"I believe managing workload is essential for bowlers. Batsmen can handle playing more matches without much issue. However, for bowlers, especially the fast ones, it is crucial," Sehwag stated in a video shared by a sports network.
He further noted that proper management could extend a bowler's career, highlighting that India's success in major tournaments like the Asia Cup or World Cup hinges on the fitness of its fast bowlers.
Key Players for India in Asia Cup 2025
With the Asia Cup set to commence on September 9, there were concerns regarding Bumrah's participation. However, these were alleviated when he was included in India's 15-member squad. Sehwag identified him as a pivotal player, alongside young talents Abhishek Sharma and mystery spinner Varun Chakravarthy.
"Abhishek Sharma has the potential to be a game-changer. Bumrah consistently proves to be one, and Varun Chakravarthy's unique bowling style has shown effectiveness in previous tournaments," he remarked.
Performance Highlights of Key Players
Bumrah played a crucial role in India's T20 World Cup victory last year, taking 15 wickets and achieving an impressive overall tally of 89 wickets from 70 matches at an average of 17.74.
Abhishek Sharma has emerged as a key player, scoring 535 runs in 17 matches with an average of 33.43 and a remarkable strike rate of 193.84, including two centuries.
Chakravarthy has also improved significantly, taking 33 wickets in 15 T20 internationals, becoming a vital wicket-taking option for the team.
